Dennis Minty is a professional wildlife and nature photographer, author, naturalist, educator and eco-adventure guide. He has authored many books of photography and environmental education. His latest bestselling books are ‘Newfoundland: An Island Apart’ and 'Labrador, The Big Land'.
Here is a rare opportunity to improve your basic understanding of the fundamentals of photography and camera operation. Also you can develop your landscape, nature, wildlife and travel photography skills in a small group setting with a highly experienced photography professional and teacher using one-on-one mentorship. Along the way enjoy stories of Dennis’ travels and experiences from around the globe. Dennis has been teaching photography for many years with carefully-structured, hands-on methods and a casual, gentle and patient style. The topics come alive through examples of his photos especially selected to illustrate the learning points. Workshops are limited to ten participants and consist of indoor sessions and immediate hands-on learning in the inspiring riverside setting of the instructor’s home base and studio in Clarke's Beach, Newfoundland, located less than an hour from St. John’s. Choose the workshop that best suits your needs and interests or take advantage of a special rate by signing up for all four. All levels of experience and camera types are welcome.

Dennis will host you at his studio and home-base in Clarke's Beach directly on the South River estuary less than an hour from St. John's. During our outdoor sessions we have over 4 private acres of woodland, wetland, gardens and small meadows to explore and provide us with plenty of inspiration. River and woodlands are home to a variety of birds and waterfowl that make perfect subjects for our wildlife photography exercises. The workshop is presented indoors in the large common area with comfortable seating and plenty of space. Feel free to bring your lunch and enjoy it here. Alternately, there are several fast food options in Bay Roberts, a five minute drive away. For those with allergies please note that a dog and cat live here.
Workshops hours: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
General structure:
Please note: structure is subject to change to allow for best use of time and weather conditions. Outdoor sessions are part of the program except in the most inclement weather so please bring appropriate clothing to ensure you are comfortable.
The indoor teaching sessions will be based on slide shows and question/answer periods during which you will learn the principles and steps associated with the topic. These will be followed by hands-on practice sessions during which you will apply what you learned. Dennis will circulate among the participants to coach you with particular focus on your learning needs and lend assistance as required.
Each workshop stands alone so you can choose the topic that most interests you or really hone your skills by taking all of them. However, please note that the latter ones assume a greater knowledge of the technical fundamentals of photography. Experienced as well as new photographers are welcome. If you are unsure of whether a workshop is right for you or which is best suited to your skill level please contact us.
